|When you think of cannabis concentrates, you probably think of dabbing. It’s not all that surprising. Dab rigs are one of the most common ways to consume these high potency products. Some people enjoy adding a bit of their favorite concentrate to ground buds to enhance their smoking experience. Another way to enjoy concentrates like budder and sugar wax is to incorporate them into homemade edibles.
What Are Budder and Sugar?
Budder and sugar are two types of cannabis concentrates. As concentrates, they’re significantly more potent than flowers, often containing between 80% and 90% THC.
Budder is well-known for being one of the purest forms of cannabis concentrate. It also retains more terpenes than most other forms of concentrates, which allows it to provide some great flavors. The process for making it is similar to how extractors make shatter. The difference, however, is that the liquid gets agitated (or whipped) to create a smooth, creamy texture.
Sugar, also called sugar wax, is another concentrate similar to budder. Where budder is creamy, sugar resembles wet sugar in appearance. The process requires agitation, but other factors like time and condensation lead to crystallization, which results in the sugar texture.
Decarbing Your Concentrates
While most concentrate users enjoy dabbing budder and sugar, you can use them in baking. The process requires making a butter or oil infusion using your concentrate of choice. The first step of the process is decarboxylation, which activates the cannabinoids.
To decarb budder or sugar, add the desired amount of concentrate to a parchment-lined baking sheet. Heat your oven to around 200° Fahrenheit and bake the concentrate for 20 to 25 minutes. Keep an eye on it to ensure it doesn’t overbake. Once it’s melty and bubbly, remove it and let it cool.
Making Infusions with Budder or Sugar
Your next step is to make your butter or oil infusion. Heat your butter or oil over low heat first, and then add the concentrate. Stir gently to incorporate the concentrate and ensure you distribute it evenly. After a few minutes, you can remove it from the heat. Once cooled, it’s ready for use.
Bake Your Favorite Recipes
You can use cannabutter and cannaoil in all of your favorite baking recipes. Whether you enjoy chocolate chip cookies, pies, cakes, or muffins, use the infused butter or oil as you would the regular ingredient.
One thing to keep in mind is the potency of your infusion. The general recommendation is one gram of budder or sugar per cup of butter or oil. As concentrate potencies can range, you should know how strong your specific product is. For instance, if your budder is 80% THC, you have 800mg of THC in one cup of butter. Let’s say you use that cup of butter in a cookie recipe that makes 24 cookies. Each cookie would have 33.33mg of THC. The standard dose for most edibles ranges between 5mg and 10mg, so your cookies will be potent. You may want to start with a half a cookie (or less) and work your way up to get used to the strength of your products.
If you like baking and cannabis, homemade edibles offer a great way for you to enjoy the best of both worlds. With concentrates like budder and sugar, you can create cannabutter or cannaoil to add to your favorite recipes, giving you a potent dose of cannabis in the form of a tasty treat.
